Knit a Shetland Hap shawl
Knit a Shetland Hap shawl
Quantity Remaining: 5 5
The Shetland Hap is traditionally the shawl to keep you warm whilst working in the cold windy Shetland isles. It could be square or triangular and was traditionally knitted in double knitting thickness of yarn, often the undyed yarn from the sheep, all of different shades.
There are many ways to knit a triangular shawl, and a Hap is constructed in a very particular way. In the workshop, we will knit our own miniature Hap (sample in blue below), so you can go home with confidence and knit the real thing!
This workshop is suitable for confident beginners. All materials will be provided however you may bring your own 4.0 mm needle if you'd like.
This workshop is led by Ethel Hillier

Excellent tutor, I won't be so fearful of charts in the future and I feel inspired to tackle the cockleshell scarf. Thank you Ethel and Debbie.
So much enjoyed the skilful and knowledgeable way that Ethel introduced us to the joys of hap shawl knitting. Although a challenging venture, having completed my mini hap I am now somewhat “hooked” and carefully selecting my full size pattern with more confidence than I’d dared to hope! And all achieved in a few enjoyable hours filled with new knitting techniques, friendly help and tea! Perfect!
Thank you Liz!
Really enjoyed the hap shawl course. I was really pleased that I managed to complete the mini shawl before the end of the lesson. Ethel was a very good and patient teacher. I’m really looking forward to trying a full sized project now and will be heading back to the shop for some wool!
Thank you Emily!
